on saturday, i decided that it was time to begin my epic cupcaking adventure.
it was really late in the afternoon and i called aren to go to san francisco.
the
drive usually isn't bad but on that day there was expected to be
traffic, unusually terrifying 50 mile per hour winds strong rain and
some hail. in addition the annual san francisco chinese new year parade
blocked off several key streets. eh whatever lets go.
so aren stavi, champion race car driver,
got there in time with much time to spare.
kara's was my first choice because i've passed by it so many times at night time when going bar hopping in the area.
ive had dreamed about going there and then i realized it might be quality.
they use mostly organic ingredients from local producers:

Which i think is really awesome. definitely a supporter of
berkeley's scharffen berger chocolate.
i
sprinted from the car to the store and then i told the counter person
that ive been dreaming of eating cupcakes and she responded that i had
come to the right place. in response, i asked her how many flavors they
had. 15 and i told her id take one of each.
Flavors:
Ghiradelli Chocolate
Sweet Vanilla
Vanilla Chocolate
Buttery Buttermilk Vanilla
Chocolate Velvet
Coconut
Kara's Carrot
Banana
Raspberry Dazzle
Java
Passion Fruit
Meyer Lemony Lemon
Fleur De Sel.
the first cupcake i had was the raspberry dazzle, it was good combination of raspberry buttercream on a chocolate cupcake. my favorites were the lemony lemon, passion fruit and the karrot cake. other than that i was somewhat disappointed, there were four base cake flavors: chocolate, vanilla, carrot and banana. I really wanted something interesting maybe a tiramisu cake base or something wild - saffron or chunks of fruit in the cupcake which would make it interesting both conceptually and texturally. but otherwise the concept and layout of the business is really cute and i can see how its a cute neighborhood place. there are also mini cupcakes that are 5 times smaller than a regular cupcake. the store itself almost resembles an apple store in design, white panels, clean design. Will be updated later, Cupcake Boy.
